A styled bed is the difference between a bedroom that looks photographed and one that just looks made. The good news: bed styling is a formula, and once you know it, it takes four minutes every morning.

Here is the exact layering order stylists use on shoot days, adapted for real life and real budgets.

Layer 1: Fitted sheet + flat sheet, inverted

Lay the flat sheet pattern-side down, so when you fold it back over the duvet the finished side shows. Natural fibers — cotton percale for crisp, linen for relaxed — wrinkle in a way that photographs as “lived-in,” not messy.

Layer 2: The duvet, folded low

Pull the duvet up, then fold the top third back toward the foot of the bed. This exposes the sheet fold and instantly creates the layered, hotel-meets-home look. Choose a duvet cover one shade off from your sheets — white on white reads sterile; ivory on white reads styled.

Layer 3: Sleeping pillows, stacked flat

Two sleeping pillows per side, stacked flat in shams that match or complement the duvet. Karate-chopping is optional; a gentle smooth-and-plump is enough.

Layer 5: The throw, draped diagonally

Fold a wool or chunky-knit throw in thirds lengthwise and drape it across one corner of the foot of the bed — diagonal and slightly imperfect. This is the single highest-impact styling move on the entire bed.

The finishing details

Nightstands follow the same odd-number rule as coffee tables: lamp, small stack of books, one organic object. Keep water glasses and chargers on the lower shelf or in a drawer. A bedroom photographs best when every visible object earns its place.
